Welcome to Nursery

Half Term Topics

Information about what the children will be learning this half term.

The Nursery children have really enjoyed exploring winter and since we had the recent cold weather the children have had real life experiences of snow and ice.  The children have enjoyed finding out what happens to water when it freezes and what happens to ice if it as left over night in Nursery.

Here are some of the pictures of the children exploring real life snow and ice.

The children have loved having a winter shop in the Nursery as they have been able to recreate roles and experiences and use their imagination.  They have been involved in the setting up of the role play and choosing what they want to sell.  The children have made price labels for some of the things in the shop and we have been talking about 1p, 2p and 5p coins.

As a Numeracy focus we have been matching pairs of socks on the washing line which links with winter and keeping warm.

The children have enjoyed having hot chocolate and tomato soup for snack time and this week we will be having porridge to keep us warm.

While we have been thinking about winter we have done some activities linked with animals that live in the cold.  The children have been involved in looking at different books and exploring them through small world play.

Over the next few weeks we will be still thinking about winter but other focuses are,

Shape

Activities will include,

Explore shapes by naming (square, triangle, rectangle and circle) and talk about their properties.  ,

Making shape pictures and creating simple repeating patterns and collages.

Using the cutters in the play dough to make different shapes and patterns.

Identifying different shapes in the environment.

Baking various different shape biscuits.

Birds

Activities will include,

Looking after the birds during winter time.

Making winter bird feeds.

Exploring the facts about birds e.g. what they like to eat.

Collage birds

Singing songs

Small world play

Using clay to make worms

Worm hunt in the outside garden and a walk around the school to see if we can see any birds.

Baking birds nests and bird biscuits.

Phonics

Activities will include,

Exploring Instrumental sounds- Children will have the opportunity to explore different musical instruments and the sounds that they make.  Familiar songs will be sung with the instruments and children will be asked to copy the pattern and tap out the beat.

Rhythm and rhyme- lots of singing of familiar rhymes and exploring rhyming books.  Children will be involved in activities that will enable them to match objects that rhyme.

General activities which are done on a daily/weekly basis are:

Counting forwards and backwards/counting rhymes

Recognising numbers

Circle games and rhymes

Wake up Shake up (aerobics/dance once a week in the hall)

We also have a colour, shape and number of the week which will be changed every 2 weeks.  Often numbers, shapes and colours will be repeated so children can consolidate their learning.

Continuous activities and provision areas where children can initiate their own play include:

Role play home corner

Construction area

Small world area (farm and jungle animals, dinosaurs, sea creatures, pets, puppets, trains, cars)

Maths/games area

Reading area

Writing area

Sand and Water area
