Shining star athletes meet every Tuesday after school to participate in our core athletics club. It is led by Mrs Harlington, level 2 qualified coach and Mrs Peacock – level 1 qualified coach.
Everyone works as a team, encouraging and supporting one another. Many skills are practised:
Running - shuttle runs, relay races, sprinting over obstacles and endurance
Throwing - soft javelin, soft discus and shot put
Jumping - standing long jump, vertical jump and high stepper
During the sessions the children have opportunities to practice their skills, take part in team competitions and also challenge themselves to improve their performance personally.
Their achievements are celebrated twice a year with presentations of medals and certificates and a trophy for the most improved athlete.
As well as competing in our own Agility Challenge which consists of the javelin, a balance test, sprinting, standing long jump and speed bounces, our athletes have also enjoyed taking part in inter school events this year against other schools in the Hungerhill Trust.
As a club and a school we have also taken part in the Doncaster Athletic Club Town Centre Fun Run. This was held in July and was a 1 mile run through the town centre. The streets were closed and it gave our athletes a feel for what a race is really like. Last year we entered 40 people with age ranges from 3 years all the way up.
We are extremely proud of all the athletes in our club – real ‘Shining Stars’.
